What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilties, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Certification
Dr. Sciacca is board certified by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture (ABMA). He has passed rigid clinical and written examination by the governing board of this organization and has over 400 hours of formal medical acupuncture training. The DABMA certification is offered only to medical (M.D.) or osteopathic (D.O.) physicians who successfully complete the prerequisite training and testing. He has achieved the highest certification status of Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (FAAMA) within that organization. The vast majority of these physicians received their training at the Helms Medical Institute (HMI) in California.

Education
The HMI program is unique because it combines the diagnostic skills taught in conventional Western medical school with those of numerous other effective acupuncture approaches. Predominantly taught was the French energetic style as populated by Dr. Joseph Helms, the "founding father" of medical acupuncture. All MD's or DO's trained by Dr Helms are also exposed to basic elements of various other Eastern or complementary acupuncture microsystems: (TCM, Auricular, Japanese superficial ,Yamamoto and Chinese scalp, and Korean hand acupuncture). Other acupuncture complementary treatments such as Gua Sha, Cupping, Craig Pens or Chan Gunn neuroanatomical and osteopuncture techniques are also introduced to Helm's students. This training allows the specialty trained physician acupuncturist to use any  one of the different types of treatments, or a combination of both, to treat an illness.

Cost of Treatment
There now exists an increased interest in acupuncture due to the volumes of published literature showing the beneficial effect it has on many chronic health and pain conditions. The current primary restriction for access to medical acupuncture treatment in Alabama is due to inadequate coverage for acupuncture treatment by the main insurance provider in the state, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama. Most patients with conditions amenable to acupuncture notice a beneficial effect within 3-4 treatments. Dr. Sciacca charges $250 for the initial pretreatment consultation visit and $150 - $175 for subsequent treatment visits.

Medical acupuncture is a system which can usually influence three areas of health care:

  • Promotion of health and well being.
  • Prevention of illness.
  • Treatment of various acute and chronic medical conditions.
